Aries Cobb: Audio Books: The Mixed-Up Chameleon (The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Mixed -Up Chameleon is full of color pictures to gain the attention of the reader.  Pictures that are bright and vibrant are key to maintaining the attention of children in the primary grades.  Readers aged 3-8 are able to view the pictures of the audio book to participate in telling the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

Graphic Organizers are ideal for teaching children the beginning, middle, and end of a story.  Graphic organizers allow children to organize their thoughts on visual aid. Aries Cobb: Advantage of Audio Books: The Rainbow Fish

Audio books are ideal for teaching young children reading skills.  Youtube offers a list of audiobooks that are free to users.  Young children are able to view the pictures, listen to the words, and share in the reading of audio books to learn language skills.

The advantage of Audio Books:
1. Students are introduced to books above their reading level,
2. Model reading with good annunciation,
3. Teach listening skills,
4. Introduce different genres to the novice reader,
5. Introduce new vocabulary and higher level thinking skills,
6. Introduction to the English language and grammar skills,
7. Provide a read-aloud model,

Aries Cobb: Nursery Rhymes Teach Reading

How to use Nursery Rhymes to Develop Language and Reading Skills

Nursery rhymes are ideal for young children to teach language skills. Many children learn through music.  A parent may use nursery rhymes in the comfort of their own home to teach their child to speak and annunciate works.  Technology in the form of video is an excellent tool for providing young children with a visual to develop reading skills.

If you are able to broadcast the nursery rhyme on the television via Youtube I suggest using a feature on the television that will show the words on the screen.  Your children are exposed to the words and the music to develop both language and reading skills.
